Q&A
What do you love about your job?
I love being a small business owner. I feel lucky every day to be making a living by selling my artwork, but more than that, I love the big-picture aspects of running a company. Being in control of the overall aesthetic of the brand is really fun!
What's your definition of success?
For me, success means doing what I love, and making enough money to support myself and my family. I've learned that working for myself and making things I really care about, and can stand behind, is my top priority. Those priorities definitely had me drinking cheap wine and cooking in for basically all of my twenties, but it was worth it in the long run!
What did you want to be growing up?
I'm on record in kindergarten declaring my desire to be president! In high school, I was interested in interior design and children's book illustration. It wasn't until I took a product illustration class in art school that I realized how much I enjoyed designing and illustrating for a line of products.

"Being a small business owner means....

every day brings new challenges, and the fact that I'm the boss means that I have to figure out how to tackle anything that comes up. That's scary, but also really gratifying."

more about me...

my proudest career moment was...
I've had a lot of moments that I'm proud of, but when I was able to move to a "real" studio and hire an employee, I felt official in a way I never did before! I'm really glad to be able to build a team and have a dedicated space for my work.
my love for creating began...
[At a very young age]. I've always loved stationery and greeting cards. I used to make handmade cards for my friends when I was a kid, and hand drew personalized placemats for my family every Christmas.
personal advice i carry with me...
It can be difficult to focus on your own goals, rather than being distracted by everything happening around you, but taking the time to figure out what I want and how to get there has been essential to my personal business growth.
