Liz Scott

Co-Executive Director of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation
Liz is the Mom of Alex Scott who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was an infant.

In 2000, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand in her front yard to raise money to help find a cure for other children with cancer. She raised over $2,000!
Moved by her story, people from all over the world held their own lemonade stands and donated the proceeds to Alex and her cause.

In her lifetime, Alex would go on to raise over $1 million before she passed away in
2004 at the age of 8.
On Alex's 9th birthday, Liz established Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) for Childhood Cancer, dedicated to carrying on her daughter’s legacy, funding and finding cures for all children battling cancer.
Liz works passionately alongside thousands of supporters across the country, coordinating sponsors and overseeing fundraising and long term planning. ALSF has funded over 800 research projects at more than 135 hospitals.

In her own words...

"It’s so rewarding to see the progress that’s been made in helping other kids with cancer which has been a direct result of the funding coming from Alex’s Lemonade Stands."

Q & A

I'm sure you've interacted with many children with cancer. What have they taught you?
So much! They have such a positive outlook on life, taking nothing for granted and being ever-so-grateful to the people who help them each day.
What is the most rewarding part about your job at the Foundation?
I love engaging kids in our fundraisers, empowering them to make a difference. When they hold a lemonade stand, they can make the signs, they can set up the table, they can make the lemonade. Just like Alex, they are helping to find cures for childhood cancer through their fundraisers.

Can you tell us about the book you wrote called "Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand"?
When Alex was sick, we wanted a way to share her story with kids. So, my husband and I wrote this book. The wonderful part about it was that Alex got to read it and be the editor!

She gave us plenty of feedback and then we’d edit it. In the end, she felt very proud to share her true story.

What are Lemonade Days
that take place each June?
Lemonade Days were actually created by Alex which makes this event super special. In 2004, she knew this was going to be her last lemonade stand because her cancer had greatly progressed. Alex decided she wanted to raise a million dollars! At the same time she was hosting her own stand, her idea was to have others run lemonade stands all over the country on the very same day. Alex called it Lemonade Days and we still continue those every year.
What have been some of the most recent ASLF accomplishments?

We opened a childhood cancer data lab! This is the first of its kind— a lab that uses computers and computer scientists to analyze data that will hopefully uncover new cures for children with cancer.

In addition to all the research we do, we’ve greatly expanded our travel funding program (airfare/hotels), helping hundreds of families who need to travel for care but are not financially in a position to do so.
