Empowering others...

Shannon’s book, It’s Not About Perfect: Competing for My Country and Fighting for My Life, is her inspirational memoir written to encourage and empower others to break through and overcome their own personal challenges.
"Mistakes are part of the learning process. I think often we’re so afraid to make a mistake or fail that we don’t try things or become paralyzed in the process. Mistakes are part of living and learning."

Q & A

What is your most fond memory from the Olympic Games?
My most fond memory is standing up on the award stand with my "Magnificent 7" teammates, watching the American flag being raised to the sound of our National Anthem. And for it to all happen on home soil, with the support of the crowd that night, was just unbelievable.
In 2015 your wrote the book "It's Not About Perfect: Competing for My Country, Fighting for My Life". What is your message behind that title?
I began writing this as short story while recovering from cancer treatments and soon I was asked to expand it to a book. It was a very emotional time for me and the ups and downs were tremendous. I worked through many of the life lessons I learned through sport that helped me through my cancer battle. I hope that people will read it and know me a little bit better, but mostly arm them with ways to deal with those inevitable curveballs life throws at us.
